The stage is set for an extra edition of the Hudson River Derby in just a few weeks.

New York City FC and Red Bull New York will face one another in the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on April 29 at Sports Illustrated Stadium, after both clubs easily handled their opponents in the Round of 32 this week.

NYCFC defeated USL League One Side Westchester SC 5-2 on Tuesday night and the Red Bulls toppled USL Championship club Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-1 on Wednesday.

Kickoff for the April 29 match is scheduled for 7 p.m.

“We are really excited,” Red Bulls head coach Michael Bradley said after Wednesday’s win about facing rival NYCFC in the next round. “I’ve watched the New York Derby from afar. I was at the game here last season, and so I think it speaks for itself in terms of the two clubs and everything that it means when two teams in the same city now play and are ready to go after each other.

NYCFC midfielder Maxi Moralez (10) grabs Red Bulls midfielder Emil Forsberg (10) during the second half of NYCFC’s regular season win in their MLS match at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Sept. 27, 2025 in Harrison, N.J. Stefan Jeremiah for New York Post

“We already mentioned it a lot before, we’re really excited. Obviously, there’s important games and there’s work to do between now and then. But for sure, when that game comes around, we will be ready, and we’re going to be really excited.”

It will mark the fourth time that the Red Bulls and NYCFC have faced one another in the U.S. Open Cup tournament, with the Red Bulls winning all three previous matchups and outscoring NYCFC 8-0.

The match will come prior to the MLS regular season meeting between the New York rivals that is scheduled to take place on May 16.

New York City FC had taken part in the U.S. Open Cup from 2015 to 2023 and was part of it in 2025, and the club has reached the quarterfinals twice.
