On Tuesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that nearly three million New Yorkers statewide will receive more than $2 billion in tax relief this summer and fall through New York’s School Tax Relief (STAR) program.

The STAR program provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners and seniors across the state.

“The start of summer also marks the beginning of STAR tax relief season for millions of New Yorkers,” Hochul said. “From tax credits and energy rebates to our expanded child tax credit and tax cuts for the middle class, we continue to put more money back in New Yorkers’ pockets.”

While some STAR recipients will receive their relief in the form of a tax exemption this year, many others will receive a tax credit and a check in the mail during the summer and fall.

Most homeowners eligible for the STAR tax credit will receive a check for between $350 and $600. Most seniors eligible for the Enhanced STAR tax credit will receive a check for between $700 and $1,500.

“This $2 billion in tax relief is vital for our families and our seniors,” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said. “At a time when New Yorkers are facing high gas prices and rising utility costs, the STAR program will put money back in their pockets. We will continue to work with our government partners to prioritize New York families and make our state a more affordable place.”

Check mailings have already begun and will continue statewide throughout the summer and fall. STAR recipients can visit ny.gov/STAR to track their check or sign up for direct deposit.

“We want all eligible homeowners to take advantage of the STAR program,” said Amanda Hiller, acting commissioner of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. “We want all eligible homeowners to take advantage of the STAR program. If you are a new homeowner or are not currently receiving the STAR benefit for your primary residence, please visit the Department of Taxation website to learn how to register and start saving.”

Locally, New York City will receive $149.7 million to benefit 474,000 beneficiaries in the counties.

Qualifying homeowners enrolled in the STAR credit program will receive their STAR check before their school tax due date.

Some areas of the state—including New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse—have school tax due dates in late June and July, so they will receive their STAR benefits soon. Benefit distribution in other parts of the state will continue throughout the summer and fall.

The distribution schedule for benefits can be found here.

“At a time when so many families are feeling the pressure of rising costs, every dollar counts,” State Senator Jessica Ramos said. “I commend Governor Hochul for continuing to invest in programs like STAR, which provide significant relief to homeowners, help families stay in their communities, and strengthen their financial stability. By putting money back in the pockets of New Yorkers, we are helping to make our state more affordable for working families, seniors, and homeowners.”
