Wyoming — the 10th largest state by area and the smallest population in the US — boasts the biggest homes on the market in the country.
The rural, western mountain state has an average home size of 2,627 square feet, according to a NetCredit analysis of 250,000 Zillow listings in US cities with populations over 100,000. NetCredit, which provides consumer loans and lines of credit, excluded listings below $50,000 and above $5 million.
Wyoming homes provide 1.67 times more elbow room than those in Pennsylvania, which has the country’s smallest homes, averaging 1,576 square feet. New York, the second smallest on the list, only edged out Pennsylvania by 10 square feet.
Behind Wyoming is Utah with an average home size of 2,440 square feet, followed by Nebraska with 2,388 square feet.
Among cities, Cheyenne, Wyoming, has the biggest homes, averaging 2,634 square feet. No. 2 is Colorado Springs, Colorado, at 2,462 square feet and then Nebraska, at 2,377 square feet.
Some cities provide more bang for your buck, which is increasingly significant as inflation continues to crush Americans’ bank accounts.
The least affordable homes can be found in Sunnyvale, California, averaging $1,045.81 per square foot. Boston, Massachusetts, follows at $1,013.84 a foot and then Santa Clara, California, at $999.52 a foot.
On the other end, Jackson, Mississippi, has the most affordable homes on a price-per-square-foot basis at $88.58. That’s followed by Peoria, Illinois, at $95.59 a foot, and then Parkersburg, Virginia, at $100.47 a foot.
