A 13-year-old boy was killed in Queens after the scooter he was riding on swerved to avoid an opening car door, but then collided with a truck, sending him under the rear of the vehicle, police said.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, was the passenger on a scooter being driven by another 13-year-old in Flushing around 12:30 p.m. Monday, according to police. The teen boys were near 162nd Street and 45th Avenue when they passed a parked car, but the driver of that car opened then opened the door.
They swerved to avoid the opening door, but then lost control of the moped and collided with the truck heading south on 162nd Street, police said. The scooter passenger fell off, right under a rear wheel of the truck.
Both the driver and the passenger of the scooter were taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead on arrival. The condition for the driver was not immediately clear.
The drivers of the truck and the parked vehicle remained at the scene, police said. It was unclear what, if any, charges would be filed.
An investigation is ongoing.
