The combination of low humidity, gusty breezes, sunshine and dry brush will elevate the tri-state’s wildfire danger on Tuesday, with areas of the Hudson Valley and Catskills at greatest risk.
A Red Flag Warning on Tuesday for Dutchess County and parts of Ulster and Sullivan Counties means that conditions are ripe for wildfire spread.

Wind gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour in the warning zone, and relative humidity will be in the 20% to 30% range, which is very low.

While the Red Flag Warning is limited to areas well north of New York City, the entire tri-state area will face elevated wildfire danger, so be extremely cautious and don’t do anything that could spark a fire outside – refrain from outdoor burning, responsibly extinguish cigarettes, and don’t do any outside work that may generate sparks.

Wildfires are almost always the result of human behavior. Only those sparked by lightning are considered naturally caused. So be mindful and be responsible.
