Attention commuters: NY Waterway ferry fares are going up, all because of fuel costs.
The company announced that starting Monday a temporary fuel surcharge will be implemented to NY Waterway fare. The increase? An average of 5.5%.
In a statement, NY Waterway spokesperson told NBC New York: “Like most transportation providers, we are contending with dramatically increased fuel costs resulting from world events beyond our control…We know that any fare change affects our customers, and we have made every effort to minimize the impact.”
Meanwhile, in a letter to customers, the NY Waterway president said the price they pay for fuel increased 80% since January.
Alison, who uses the ferry once a week said, adding that while for her the increase is not a problem, it is one for “the young people starting their careers, people with families, trying to grow their finances.”
The rising fuel costs is impacting the daily lives of many people — and not just drivers.
As the conflict in Iran continues thousands of miles away, there is optimism about a possible deal, but the impact is still hitting home and it’s more than just gas prices.
The United States Postal Service also temporarily raised prices 8% on certain packages to help with rising transportation costs.
Meanwhile, NY Waterway said it will update its customers once the temporary period will be over.
