Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has pneumonia and is still hospitalized in critical but stable condition, his spokesman said Monday, hours after news broke that the disbarred Republican had fallen ill.
Spokesman Ted Goodman said Giuliani is now breathing on his own, with his family at his side.
The news comes hours after President Donald Trump posted a message on his social media platform acknowledging his one-time adviser had been hospitalized.
Goodman described Giuliani as a fighter.
“On September 11th, Mayor Giuliani ran toward the towers to help those in need, which later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease,” Goodman said. “This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition.”
The former mayor remained in critical but stable condition Monday.
Giuliani, 81, who became mayor after serving as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was lionized for his response to the September 11th terrorist attacks in Lower Manhattan. But he was disbarred in New York in 2024 after spreading lies surrounding Donald Trump and the 2020 election.
“We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani,” Goodman wrote in the Sunday posting. He did not indicate what health matters Giuliani is facing.
Giuliani was injured in a car crash in New Hampshire last year.
Giuliani served as mayor from 1994 through 2001.
