A sinkhole opened up near a runway at LaGuardia Airport, leading to delays and possible cancellations at the New York City hub.
In a statement shared on social media, the airport said Port Authority was conducting a daily inspection of the airfield around 11 a.m. when crews discovered the sinkhole near Runway 4/22.
The runway was shut down, with emergency and construction crews set to determine the cause and complete any repairs, airport officials said.
Delays and cancellations can be expected as a result of closing down the runway. And with storms in the forecast for Wednesday afternoon, impacts on travel should be expected.
As of 2:30 p.m., flights to LaGuardia were already being delayed an hour and a half.
The runway where the sinkhole was found is the same one where an Air Canada jet crashed into emergency vehicles while landing in March, killing the two pilots.
